Ounasjoki river at 8.30 am, 15th September 2006
The last day of the conference started in a cold but sunny
weather, with the city of Rovaniemi and the Ounasjoki river
surrounded in beutiful mist. The general atmosphere at the parallel
sessions was proactive and enthusiastic: following Paul Timmers'
suggestion at day before, people were willing to act now to
mainstream DfA.
Timmers hosted the concluding plenary session, with several
comments from the participants especially on DfA education, but
also on other themes. The auditorium was full almost to the last
seat when the event's last keynote speaker, professor Pekka
Himanen, entered the stage. Himanen is a professor at the
University of Art and Design in Helsinki, and a visiting professor
at the university of Oxford. He is especially famous for his works
on information society.
One central message of Pekka Himanen' was that we have to move
from the vicious circle of exclusion to the virtuos circle of
inclusion. In contemporary information society, the users are
increasingly becoming designers and innovators, and this
development has to be supported. The operating system Linux,
developed by Linus Torvalds with a huge voluntary community of
other developers, is a perfect example of the benefits that new
kind of inclusion can bring.
Another issue that Himanen dealt with was that we need equal
opportunities, not a society of reproductive luck. In other words,
just society is designed so that you could accept the society even
if you wouldn't know which role in society you would play.
The arrangers would like to give big thanks to everyone who
participated or helped in making the conference possible. The
outcomes will be published in the form of a DVD and web-based video
at the end of this year.
